We at Ready for Reading hope you are well and safe. World-wide we’ve all been profoundly affected by COVID-19. However, our work doesn’t stop and it is more important than ever to be there for our community.
EVERYDAY Ready for Reading opens it’s doors to over 300 people of all ages who participate in a wide variety of programs; literacy, IT, sports, music, Boys, Girls and Mom’s clubs, health, micro-finance and more. Most of the folks in Rwinkwavu are confined to small houses without TV, computers and books. In response to the stay-at-home order in Rwanda the Ready for Reading Team has gone “virtual” working to keep our community engaged, reading and learning.
Like so many nonprofits, COVID-19 has interrupted Ready for Reading’s funding flow. In addition to our normal costs we are in need of funds to purchase radio broadcast time and Internet to keep our team working from home and keep the community connected.

Betsy and the Ready for Reading Team
Ready for Reading has been recognized as 1 of 15 U.S. Library of Congress Best Practices Honorees from an international pool of applicants. Betsy Dickey, Ready for Reading Founder, attended the Conference October 31st at the Library of Congress in Washington, D.C. The event brought together this remarkable group of organizations doing their part world-wide to combat illiteracy and lack of educational resources and opportunities to those in underserved communities.
“It was truly an honor to be representing Ready for Reading in a room full of so many passionate promoters of literacy and reading,” said Dickey. “So proud of the hard work and dedication of our Ready for Reading Team for making this award possible.”
Originated by philanthropist David M. Rubenstein in 2013, the awards
honor organizations doing exemplary, innovative and replicable work. They spotlight the need for communities worldwide to unite in working for universal literacy.
“Literacy is the ticket to learning, opportunity and empowerment on a global scale,” said Librarian of Congress Carla Hayden. “Through the generosity of David M. Rubenstein, the Library of Congress is proud to honor and celebrate the achievements of these extraordinary organizations in their efforts to advance reading levels and give people the foundation for a better life.”
We are proud to have received this Award acknowledging the work RfR is doing to give people in this remote rural area the chance to access literacy and educational programs and build a culture of reading from the youngest children to grandparents.
